It has been 15 years since Matt and I were married and nearly 20 since we started dating. We still have a long time to go, I hope, but we're not the young lovebirds we once were. Don't get me wrong, I don't know that 'd go back to those early days of marriage; both working and going to school, knowing he'd been there because there was a drool spot on his pillow. Nope, I much prefer where we are now; although it does get a little crazy at times.
In honor of our 15th anniversary, we decided to take a little weekend getaway for rest and relaxation. A big thanks to my folks for watching our wee ones; especially since Will barely slept at all!
We flew to Cancun on Saturday, August 4th. Who in their right mind goes to Cancun in August? Clearly we are not in our right mind. However, despite the heat and the approaching hurricane, we had a marvelous time.
We planned very little and that was just the way we liked it. Because I'm married to "First Class Matt" we love to partake in a few travel perks. We were so excited to arrive and find out we'd been upgraded to the Caribbean Suite -- two rooms, two televisions and most importantly in Mexico, two toilets. Just kidding. But we had two balconies and LOVED watching the ocean roll in.
The seas were not calm during our visit by everything was perfect for lounging by the pool and enjoying a frozen drink with a little umbrella in it, sin alcohol, of course.
We walked along the beach (literally, for miles), got sand in places I didn't know existed thanks to the waves (get your mind out of the gutter), drank aforementioned drinks, bought silver jewelry and watched a lot of the Olympics. We slept as late as we wanted and took naps, ate ice cream in the afternoon and took the bus into town to buy hammocks.
I love going to Mexico with Matt. He relaxes and really enjoys himself. He is a great guide and it is so fun to hear him talk in Spanish with all the people we encounter. I believe that it was his mission that gave him the great interpersonal skills he has today and at no time is that more evident than when he's speaking Spanish.
I think the next trip we take down there will be with our kids. It will include ruins, pirate forts, churches old and new, snorkeling and exploring culture. We are so excited to share these things with our children but for now, it was great to have a few days alone, the opportunity to recharge and reconnect and, yes, celebrate us! (gag!)

Brings back memories of the trip we took with you guys. Good times. When you guys get ready to take the whole family, let us know. We'd love to take ours too. That would be so fun. Maybe somewhere all inclusive, that way we could hang out together but also have the freedom to do our own thing. Have we really been with these guys for 20 years?
